Erik M. Roper was born in Long Beach and is a lifelong resident of California. Prior to pursuing his college education, Mr. Roper served with distinction from 1996-2000 as an active duty enlisted soldier in the U.S. Army’s 39th Finance Battalion. During his years in the Army, Mr. Roper served in Germany, Bosnia and Kosovo. Following his honorable discharge from the Army, Mr. Roper transferred to California State University, San Marcos (CSUSM), where he eventually graduated with honors in 2004 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Sciences. While at CSUSM, Mr. Roper devoted himself to activism and leadership, becoming the founder of CSUSM’s Progressive Activists Network and getting elected by the student body to serve two consecutive terms as an executive officer of the student government. Additionally, in the 2003-2004 academic year, Mr. Roper served as the Environmental Affairs Officer to the statewide student government (California State Student Association) and in that role he organized and led a statewide campaign that culminated in the CSU Board of Trustees voting in June of 2004 to adopt a CSU-wide policy requiring sustainable building design and the use of clean energy. Upon graduating, Mr. Roper was awarded CSUSM’s annual Outstanding Student Leadership Award.
Following his graduation from CSUSM, Mr. Roper taught English in Mexico City by day and worked on his law school applications by night. Mr. Roper began his law school career at Golden Gate University School of Law (GGU), finished near the top of his class at the end of his 1L year, and while there earned the Witkin awards for Writing & Research II, Property II, Torts I and Criminal Law, as well as the CALI awards for Writing & Research I, and Criminal Law. Mr. Roper transferred to UC Berkeley’s School of Law, Boalt Hall, at the beginning of his 2L year where he eventually earned his J.D. in 2008, with a specialization in Environmental Law. During his time at Boalt, Mr. Roper volunteered with both the Ecology Law Quarterly (ELQ) and Boalt’s Environmental Law Society (ELS). Mr. Roper spent much of his 3L year at Boalt chairing and organizing ELS’s 4th Annual Environmental Justice Symposium, From Protection to Empowerment: Policy Solutions to Ensure Equal Access to the Green Economy.
Upon graduating from Boalt, Mr. Roper accepted a position as a law clerk to the Hon. Peter J. Busch in the Law and Motion department of San Francisco’s Superior Court. Following his time with Judge Busch, Mr. Roper accepted a position as an Associate Attorney with the Law Offices of Andrew L. Packard in Petaluma, California. During his tenure with Mr. Packard’s firm, Mr. Roper’s civil litigation practice primarily focused on enforcing federal and state consumer protection laws.
Since leaving Mr. Packard’s firm, Mr. Roper has shifted his focus to litigating employment law, catastrophic personal injury and medical malpractice disputes. Mr. Roper is a member of the California State Bar, Labor and Employment Section and is admitted to practice in all California state courts, the United States District Courts for the Eastern and Northern Districts of California, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Additionally, Mr. Roper is a member of the Sacramento County Bar Association, the Capital City Trial Lawyers Association (CCTLA), the Consumer Attorneys of California (CAOC), and the California Employment Lawyers Association (CELA). In 2016 and 2017, Mr. Roper received the prestigious Rising Star Award from Super Lawyers Magazine.
In his free time, Mr. Roper enjoys racquetball, riding his road bike on the American River bike trail, backpacking throughout California, playing strategy board games with friends, meditation, writing in his journal, playing with his dog, and spending time with his wife and their friends and family. Mr. Roper is grateful for the opportunity to serve the clients of the BLG, and for the opportunity to learn from Mr. Bohm, one of the most dynamic, inspiring and consistently victorious trial attorneys in California.
